We have already seen the Federal Government step in and ban text messaging and driving for commercial drivers . Numerous states have also weighed in on the issue and imposed texting bans on truck drivers , bus drivers and city employees driving a government vehicle. Some states even have laws in place to stop their citizens from distracted driving. It seems Iowa is set to join that list.
By a 20-1 vote an Iowa House committee approved the ban on texting and driving and the law is expected to be approved when it hits the floor in front of the full House. The law was narrowly focused on just text messaging and did not tackle the other issues surrounding distracted driving like talking on a cell phone or using hands-free devices. Penalties include fines and license suspensions depending on whether or not the texting caused an accident.
