Pinellas County, Florida is part of the Tampa metropolitan area and has a population over a million people. Although the Pinellas County Sheriffs is the main law enforcement agency in the county, it is not the only one. The Florida Highway Patrol, Cities of Bellair, Bellair Beach, Clearwater, Gulfport, Indian Shores, Kenneth City, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg Beach, Tarpon Springs, and Treasure Island. In total, law enforcement issued just shy of 115,000 moving citations last year. Almost half of those moving violations were for unlawful or speeding violations. Aside from speeding tickets, law enforcement in Pinellas County wrote almost 20,000 tickets for running a red light, and 12,000 tickets for careless driving.
Police in Pinellas County did not just write people tickets that have the penalty of points. They arrested and/or issued criminal citations to almost 30,000 people last year. Over ten percent of those citations were for motorists arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). Over half of the citations were for people charged with driving while license suspended in violation of Florida Statute 322.34 or No Valid driver’s license in violation of Florida statute 322.03.
Pinellas county is part of Florida’s sixth Judicial Circuit. There are 18 county court Judges assigned to Pinellas County. There are three courthouses in the county. There is a south county annex located 1800 66th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. Judge William Overton is assigned to that courthouse and he listens to tickets and criminal cases but there are no jury trials at that location. A north county traffic complex is located at 29582 US Highway 19, Clearwater, FL 33761. That Judge listens to misdemeanor criminal cases and civil traffic infractions. The other county court Judges are assigned to the Criminal Justice Complex on 49th Street in Clearwater. Those Judges are assigned civil and criminal cases and that is the lcoation of all jury trials.
